where she stands....
Kerala with the beautiful caption GODS OWN COUNTRY can be proud of a lot of things. the high literacy rate, relatively better social status, high female to male ratio, and a lot more.
even with all these social advancements a major art of the society is still being oppressed and marginalized. that includes dalits and the WOMEN,
Kerala is no where different in case of gender inequality and gender related discriminations.
with the new social reforms and cultural developments, the population inversion in our society is also taking place. the recent census shows that the female ratio to that of male is alarmingly decreasing in the 0-5 years of age.
an appraisal of the various structural parts of our society clearly shows how the discrimination to the women folk by the male dominated society.
starting from the basic system like the family. the distribution of power is yet to happen over here. the discrimination continued in the family is simplified as the 'jus-mariti' and socially accepted. when we considered us as one of the most civilized and democratic society, the same concepts a miles away from our family door steps.
Kerala may be the only state in India where the women are a major part in the working class. that results the self earning capacity to her. but it seldom gives her a financial independence. the idealised womanhood defined by the male dominated society seldom gives her a chance to utilize the money she has earned according to her wish. and everybody wants to become the ideal.....
the most politically sensible society in India is certainly Kerala, but here also the participation from the half of the population is not accounted. irrespective of the left / right all the political organization has a complete male dominated power structure. and the elected member and their assembly never constitutes a representative structure.
why with all these high social rating among the states , the women are still oppressed and ill treated?
this question points to the stereo-typed society. we are still not ready to understand the individuality of a woman and ready to give her a chance to come out into the social mainstream from the interior of our kitchen.
None of the national / social issues like war poverty, economic reforms etc are allowed to addressed or discussed by the one half of the society.
again, if we see the statistics of criminal records, we are not far behind the other states of India at-least in gender related crime. no woman is socially secure in any part of the society.
the existing power structure is limiting even her freedom to travel. the walking style for an ideal female is defined and this even limits here free body movements. Kerala may be the only state where mixed seating is an ethical crime.
Here, the most civilized(?) society, still teat woman as a commodity , still prevailing local slang for her is "charakku" (goods). the definition for chastity very much like that, she is treated a bottle of cola or something with a perfect seal. and the marker value depends on the condition of the so called 'seal'.
on a closer examination reveals more codes of conduct designated for the female part by the society. and the roots of this we can see in out so defined 'Hindu Culture'. Manusmrithi is still followed even after so many manuantharas....
So we can happy we are not far from thretha yuga, where Seetha (the ideal sturcture of a wife) was also treated like this by the GOD. The Males in the GODS OWN COUNTRY is more near to the god.... and be merry with this.
